Constance Town on Lake Constance

This time i am introducing charming town on the Swiss-German border ,which i visited with my husband ,brother and his girlfriend on a really hot sunny day which turned in a horrific stormy afternoon with hail and flooded streets , but we escaped just in time and the town was also left unharmed:-)

Konstanz  or Constance is situated on Lake Constance (Bodensee in German). The Rhein river, passes through Lake Constance and the town .

Konstanz is an incredibly old town ,traces date back to the late stone age, then settled by the Romans and after Germans . Located at the intersection of main routes of commerce between Italy, France and Eastern Europe, the city became an important emporium for the trade with fur, linen and spices from the 10th to the 14th century. In the 15th century, a four-year long council took place in Constance that attracted 72.000 visitors, among them 3000 prostitutes. A walk through town is an encounter with many traces of past centuries of prosperity.

Old Town , which is large considering the small size of modern Konstanz, has many old beutiful coloful buildings and twisting alleys. The city skyline is dominated by the majestic Munster Cathedral,  several other churches and three towers left over from the city wall, one of which marks the place of the former medieval bridge over the Rhine.

Lake promenade stretches along the town ,you can take a long walk socialising with numerous swans and ducks , or take a boat ride around the lake . At the entrance of the harbour, stands  Imperia, a nine-meter high statue created in 1993  The notorious beauty made of stone was built by sculptor Peter Lenk and has become the town’s landmark. A historic character, a prostitute who was also a literary figure in Honoré de Balzac’s short stories, inspired the voluptuous figure.

And If you look up in the sky you might see a Zeppelin which is really rare .It flies from Friedrichshafen and around the lake with up to 12 passanges on board  and speed around 70 Km/h.

So this time it was my forth time in Konstanz ,but surely is not the last , becouse there is always something going on and it is also great for shopping.
